BAHIA HONDA STATE PARK

Bahia Honda State Park is having its 17th Annual Earth Day Celebration on April 14, 2012 from 9AM – 2PM. There will be live music provided by local musicians. The local Moose Lodge from Big Pine Key will be cooking up some wonderful hot dogs, sloppy Joes and fixin’s for the event. Come early, since parking is limited. Activities will include: face painting, puppet show, fish printing and sand sculpture contest. There will be environmental exhibits and booths, marine life touch tanks and children’s activities. The Florida Keys Astronomy Club will set up telescopes with special lens for viewing the sun. For more information, please call the Bahia Honda Sand and Sea Nature Center at (305) 872-9807.

EARTH DAY RESTORATION DIVES
CORAL RESTORATION FOUNDATION

Certified scuba divers can take part in an active coral reef restoration program with the marine scientists from Key Largo’s Coral Restoration Foundation in conjunction with Sustainatopia, one of the world’s largest events that celebrates the fusion of social, financial and environmental sustainability, this year held in Miami April 19-25. Three full-day excursions in Key Largo are available Friday through Sunday, April 20-22. Participants meet for a morning training session discussing causes of coral reef decline, CRF’s role in coral restoration and how recreational divers help by volunteering. A two-tank guided afternoon dive excursion to the offshore coral nursery and an active reef restoration site includes a tour of one of the reefs where CRF has been restoring corals, followed by hands-on coral propagation and nursery maintenance activities. If weather conditions allow, participants will be able to help plant nursery-grown corals on the reef. This is primarily a dive excursion, and active participants must be certified open-water scuba divers. Cost is $100 per person and minimum age is 14.

MM 59 bayside on Grassy Key, is to host its annual Ocean Day Celebration Thursday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. DRC welcomes Florida Keys third- and fifth-grade classes for a fun-filled day of watching the center’s resident dolphins and learning about marine life, the Florida Keys environment and other topics. As well as Dolphin Research Center, presenters include numerous environmental organizations such as Bahia Honda State Park, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Reef Relief. The center is open daily to the public. General admission is $20 per adult, $15 per child ages 4-12, $17.50 for members of the military and free for children 3 and younger. THE BARNACLE HISTORIC STATE PARK

Celebrate all things green at The Barnacle. Booths will feature green businesses and local environmental groups. There will be environmental activities for the kids.
